Slovak language is spoken by around 5.5 million people. In addition to Slovakia, this West Slavic language is spoken in the Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia, Poland, Romania, the USA, Hungary, Austria and Ukraine.

The first texts written in Slovak date back relatively late, not before the 15th century. In the period between the 14th and the 18th century, the Slovaks used Czech or Latin as literary languages. Due to unfavourable political situation (Slovakia was long under the rule of the Kingdom of Hungary), literary Slovak began to develop as late as at the end of the 18th century. Slovak was largely influenced by the Czech, Hungarian, and German languages, and in the modern time, by the English language.

Slovak is written in the Latin script with small modifications which refer to diacritical signs (the so-called “glyphs” – small additional elements of letters which affect the pronunciation, the sound-value of a letter).
