Japanese language is an isolated language from the Japanese language family, spoken by about 130 million of people in Japan, Hawaii, Brazil, Palau, parts of China and Korea, while it is an official language only in Japan and the island of Palau.
Japanese is written with its own script that which was taken from China in the 5th century, but they adopted a special system of symbols, called kana, out of which two phonetic scripts emerged - Hiragana and Katakana. Each of these scripts is used for various purposes – i.e. Hiragana is used for writing words of Japanese origin, while Katakana is used for writing foreign words, onomatopoeias and accented words. There is also Romaji script which is used for transcription purposes. The Japanese have also two writing directions – the traditional vertical writing from up downwards and from right to left and the horizontal writing from left to right.
The characteristic of Japanese language is that speech varies according to the degree of familiarity. Thus, speech is divided into plain, simple polite and advanced polite form, depending on whether you are addressing superiors, friends, family or strangers. That is why it, people who are not familiar with Japanese culture encounter difficulties when learning the language. The Japanese language is regulated by the Japanese government.
